I hate the comments I get all the time. Like after the last gig, a guy from another band said to our drummer:
"I thought he was some kind of friend of yours come to see the show, or a roadie or whatever, but not the singer." *sigh

For the first half of our trip, we were at Lake Atitlan, near Santiago, Guatemala. It is a lake formed in a caldera surrounded by 3 volcanoes and the shores are dotted with Mayan villages. Yeah. It sucked.

We then traveled to Antigua, Guatemala. The city was formed in the 1500s. There are tons of fabulous churches and residences and ruins (from the 1773 earthquake), cobblestone streets, markets, beautiful people, all surrounded by more volcanoes.









These were amazing. They called them jade flowers.




We did a sunset hike of the Pacaya volcano one day. It is an active volcano (it erupted in May killing 3). We didn't get to see any active lava flow (it's flow takes different routes at times), but there was a chasm that we roasted the most perfect marshamallow in, just from the heat from below. And we experienced a magnificent sunset above the clouds






Of course the reason we were all there was for the wedding of our best buddies! The bride, the setting, the ceremony - all were beautiful and so full of emotion. It was a great, great night.

Yes, everyone should go! And it's cheap once you get there. In Antigua, we stayed in a beautiful house that slept 7. It had 2 open air courtyards, a rooftop patio with volcano view and was within walking distance of the central square and market and it was just $100 US a night.

B - you would have loved it. Everywhere my gaze fell I could have taken a photo of.

Haunz - I know very basic Spanish and managed to get by, relying on sign language and pointing. Many of the tour operators and hotel/restaurant employees knew some English, but the majority did not. They are well known for their language schools there where you can do some intense study and stay with local families to learn Spanish in 4 weeks. I'd love to do that!
